SABA endorses Judge Sanjay Kumar

SABA endorses Judge Sanjay Kumar The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California announces its endorsement of Judge Sanjay Kumar On June 5, 2012, Judge Sanjay Kumar is running for re-election as Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge.

The Metropolitan News-Enterprise, the daily legal newspaper, has called Judge Kumar a “model jurist” who is “uncontroversial and highly respected by colleagues and the bar” and “one of the finest judges in the state.” He has been a member of the judiciary for nearly 12 years, praised for his work ethic, demeanor, and intellect.

Los Angeles Superior Court Presiding Judge Lee Smalley Edmon says that “He’s a fabulous judge,” and that “He’s excelled in every position he’s held on the court.”

The Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, has elevated Judge Kumar from his position at the Superior Court to a temporary judgeship on the California Court of Appeals for sixteen of the past twenty-four months.

Judge Kumar is not being challenged because of his ability then but “based on his name.”

In 1992, then-Citrus Municipal Court Judge Abraham Aponte Khan was defeated by Patrick Murphy. Murphy would be forced to resign his position in 2001 and was disbarred by 2004. In contrast, Judge Khan was elected again to the court in 1994, and remains a member of the Superior Court today In 2006, Judge Dzintra Janavs, another universally respected jurist, was defeated by an non-practicing lawyer who ran a bagel shop in Manhattan Beach named Lynn Olson.

In 2010, Judge Kumar’s challenger ran for an open judicial seat but was soundly rejected. The Metropolitan News-Enterprise, in contrast to its glowing reviews of Judge Kumar, found him to be “Lacking judicial temperament, succinctness, reasonableness and objectivity … a disaster as a judicial officer.” The Los Angeles County Bar Association rated him as “not qualified.”

Today, he is running again. However, Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley has said that Judge Kumar’s challenger is “undertaking the challenge for a very wrong reason” and once the public realizes this, “he will be vilified and denigrated—and properly so.”

That is why the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California is proud to lend its support and endorsement to Judge Sanjay T. Kumar. We encourage the community to spread the word of his campaign and make sure to get out and vote June, 5, 2012 to ensure that another exceptional member of our community is not unseated again.

For residents of Los Angeles County, remember to vote on June 5, 2012 and remember to vote for Judge Sanjay Kumar.
