February 9, 2012,
Current issues in immigration law

The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California (SABA), in conjunction with the Orange County Asian American Bar Association (OCAABA) present a discussion on immigration law.

UCI law Professors Sameer Ashar and Stephen Lee will attempt to answer such pressing questions as:

  • What are the implications of the passage of laws regulating immigrants at the state and local level?
  • How does the Supreme Court decision in Chamber of Commerce v. Whiting from the last term and the upcoming decision in the Arizona case alter the framework of immigration law?
  • What do these changes in the law and the relations between levels of government mean for immigrants and immigrant communities?
  • More than his predecessors, President Obama is using criminal law to identify potentially removable immigrants. What is the purpose of such a shift? What are the consequences of such a policy shift? Who wins and who loses under such a policy?

There is no cost for this event. Light refreshments will be served.

February 9, 2012, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. (check-in starting at 5:30 p.m.)
