SABA-SC Applauds the Historic Appointment of Rupa S. Goswami to the Los Angeles County Superior Court

Los Angeles, CA – The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California ("SABA-SC") (www.sabasc.org) applauds Rupa S. Goswami's historic appointment to the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. appointed Rupa to the state bench on July 12, 2013, making her the first South Asian female judge in the State of California.

"This appointment is profound," exclaimed Puneet V. Kakkar, SABA-SC Co-President. "Rupa has been a bedrock for the South Asian-American community in Southern California through her leadership, mentorship, and service. She is a trailblazer with respect to the legal issues she tackles and the justice she accomplishes. All of this will only be multiplied now that she is on the bench."

An immigrant from India, Rupa grew up in rural Ohio and Florida. A working mom, she has served as a federal prosecutor for the past twelve years at the United States Attorney's Office for the Central District of California. Her work protecting child victims of sexual exploitation, environmental crime, and endangered species has been recognized by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, the FBI, and the Humane Society of the United States. Prior to becoming a prosecutor, she clerked for Honorable Nora Manella, then-U.S. District Judge, and for the late Honorable Terence T. Evans of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. Rupa also practiced civil litigation at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in Los Angeles. A graduate of the University of Chicago and UCLA, Rupa holds both an MBA in finance and a JD. She has been active in community service in the county and state. A former JNE commissioner, Rupa has served as a pro tem judge, a teen court moderator, and an adjunct professor of trial advocacy at Loyola Law School. Rupa has been a long-time board member of SABA-SC and currently serves as its Co-President. She has been recognized by SABA-SC's Public Interest Foundation and the North American South Asian Bar Association for her public service and community outreach efforts.

Honorable Upinder S. Kalra, Judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court and SABA-SC Board Member, noted that "I am so proud of Rupa. In fact, this is a proud moment for the entire South Asian community and all immigrants. Rupa has once again demonstrated that in America, with hard work and opportunity, anything is possible. Her experience and long-standing commitment to serving the public will serve her well in her transition to the bench. I look forward to working alongside her on the Los Angeles Superior Court. I expect that she will be an outstanding jurist."

Honorable Nora Manella, Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal, adds that "Rupa is an extraordinary person. She brings to the bench a wealth of talent, stellar academic and professional credentials, and a breadth of human experience that spans continents and cultures. She will be a judge whose legal acumen is exceeded only by her expansive understanding of human nature. Her appointment is a credit to the Governor and a gift to the lawyers and litigants who will appear before her."
