SABA-SC Public Interest Foundation 2018-2019 Grant Applications Are Open!

The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California Public Interest Foundation is now accepting grant applications from public interest organizations. The Foundation gives preference to organizations that offer services to the South Asian-American community in Southern California, especially communities that are indigent or traditionally underserved.

Grant applications must be submitted to no later than 5:00 pm PT on Friday, September 28, 2018. Grant awards will be announced on or before October 31, 2018. For more information, please contact Aditi Fruitwala at or Hemali Shah at

SABA-SC Participates in California APA Bar Association Reception

On August 1, 2018, SABA-SC and leaders from more than 30 APA bar associations across the state participated in California APA Bar Association’s Reception honoring Joshua Groban, Senior Advisor for Policy and Appointments, Office of Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. SABA-SC applauds Mr. Groban, Governor Brown, and many others for their continuing support to increase the diversity of the state court bench, including most recently by appointing the Honorable Halim Dhanidina to the Second District Court of Appeal.

Meet Our Board

Ruchika Verma is an associate at Morrison & Foerster LLP specializing in patent prosecution, counseling, and IP due diligence. She advises clients in a variety of technology areas, including semiconductors, reconfigurable

architectures, parallel hardware architectures, embedded systems, video compression, computer networks, software development, and software user interfaces. Before joining MoFo, Ruchika externed in the patent pilot program for the Central District of California. While in law school, Ruchika was an executive articles editor of the UCLA Journal of Law and Technology (JOLT).

Ruchika currently serves as SABA-SC’s Events Co-Director. Her favorite SABA-SC event is the annual banquet because it provides a networking opportunity while celebrating the diversity of our community -- banquet attendees dress in colorful, traditional Indian attire and enjoy delicious Indian food and Bollywood music and dance. She believes that kindness, compassion, and integrity are the three most important values, which she adheres to in both her personal and professional life.

Rohit Nath is an associate at Susman Godfrey, LLP, where he litigates high-stakes cases across the country. Rohit’s experience includes class actions against life insurance carriers, commercial property disputes, and patent litigation. Before joining Susman Godfrey, Rohit worked as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice and clerked on the Ninth Circuit.

WLALA presents On the Back Burner - The Under the Radar Issues Facing American Women and the Public Interest Leader

The Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles is hosting a program on August 22 discussing issues impacting low-income women in Los Angeles that are rarely discussed, including housing instability, homelessness, HIV/AIDS-status, and access to public benefits. Manju Kulkarni, the former Executive Director of the South Asian Network, will be speaking on this panel and addressing how South Asian women are especially impacted by these issues. SABA-SC Presents Path To Partnership

Save the Date! SABA-SC will be hosting a panel discussion on September 13 featuring South Asian American partners. The panelists will discuss their career trajectory, including how they advanced to partnership, and will offer tips on how to succeed. Stay tuned for more details!
