Dear SABA-SC Members and Friends,

It’s hard to believe that it’s already summertime! SABA-SC has been busy since the new Board of Directors was sworn in at the end of March, and we’re looking forward to seeing more of you at our upcoming events. But first, a little update on what we’ve been up to since we last wrote.

This past May, we were pleased to partner with SABA North America on its “first-of-its-kind” nationwide naturalization drive. All SABA chapters were invited to participate in this worthwhile program to assist individuals in the local community to apply for citizenship. SABA-SC teamed up with the South Asian Network and SAHARA to provide information on the importance of and requirements for becoming a US citizen to the Little Bangladesh community in Los Angeles.

Speaking of SABA North America, many of us are looking forward to reconnecting with our South Asian colleagues at the Annual Conference at the end of June. We’re especially excited to attend because SABA NA will be recognizing two of Southern California’s star South Asian attorneys that SABA-SC nominated for the awards. Kalpana Srinivasan and Laboni Hoq will be receiving the Cornerstone Award and Public Interest Achievement Award, respectively. Congratulations, Kalpana and Laboni!

For those of you who aren’t able to travel to New York for SABA NA’s Annual Conference, we hope you’ll join us on July 12 for a mixer in Orange County. Executive Board member Janani Rana’s firm Minyard Morris has graciously agreed to host our mixer, and it promises to be a lovely evening catching up with old friends and making new connections. More information about the mixer, including how to RSVP, is in this month’s newsletter.

Finally, we are busy working on updates to improve our ability to deliver valuable information to you. In addition to introducing the new format for the newsletter this past March, SABA-SC and SABA-Public Interest Foundation have been hard at work on launching a new mobile-friendly SABA-SC website to serve as a resource for our membership and the community. We plan to unveil it in the coming months, so stay tuned!

We hope to see you often during the summer, and look forward to writing again with more updates in the fall.

Member Spotlight

Janani Rana

Janani Rana is a family law attorney at Minyard Morris in Newport Beach. She is a Certified Family Law Specialist, and her trial practice includes property division, business valuation, complex asset litigation, and custody. She enjoys the variety and complexity that family law offers and appreciates the significance her work has on the lives of her clients.

Janani first served on the SABA-SC PIF Board several years ago and later joined the SABA-SC Board. She currently serves as SABA-SC’s Co-President Elect, and previously as SABA-SC’s Events Co-Director and Secretary. Janani strongly recommends that newly barred South Asian attorneys become involved with SABA-SC or PIF because of the incredible connections to be made, both personal and professional. Her favorite SABA-SC event remains the annual banquet because it provides an excellent opportunity to see old friends and make new ones. Plus, the food is always excellent.

Janani and her husband Gaurang welcomed their first child this past February. In late May, Janani happily headed back to the office after completing a grueling twelve-week sleep deprivation boot camp.
