1. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS — SABAPIF LEGAL CLINIC
The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California Public Interest Foundation (SABAPIF) has recently launched a new initiative in establishing legal clinics–which will connect members of the South Asian bar with those who need legal services, including those from the South Asian community. This is an excellent opportunity for attorneys of South Asian descent to provide their excellent experience and training toward efforts that strengthen the South Asian American community–and it is surprising how little effort it takes. SABAPIF, in conjunction with the South Asian Network (SAN) and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), will assist members of the South Asian community (and other members of the community at large) in becoming citizens of the United States of America on September 10, 2011 at SAN’s offices in Artesia. Community members who attend will be assisted with filing out their applications and preparing for the citizenship process. Volunteers must attend a training before the clinic, subject to their availability and schedules. The training will occur in the latter half of August. CLE credit may be provided for attending this training.
If you are interested in this training, or have any questions, please email SABAPIF President Puneet Kakkar at pvkakkar@gmail.com. Please respond no later than August 12, 2011. We look forward to your interest!

CALL FOR SOLICITATIONS! — DEADLINE EXTENDED
ABOUT THE FOUNDATION:
The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California Public Interest Foundation (the “Foundation”) is dedicated to organizing, supporting and promoting public interest activities for the benefit of the South Asian community and the Southern California community at large. Established in 2003, the Foundation is proud of its past and ongoing efforts to promote public-interest work in Southern California. The Foundation seeks to unite members and friends of the South Asian community over our shared commitment to public service, recognize the outstanding achievements of local South Asian lawyers and trailblazers and award grants to organizations and law students dedicated to serving the public interest.
The Foundation hosts an annual fundraising dinner, assembling lawyers, academics, and distinguished members of the judiciary to recognize public interest achievements in the South Asian community. Proceeds from the Foundation’s fundraising go directly to grants for community groups and law students working in the public interest field. In addition, the Foundation has sought to expand its outreach in the community by hosting panels at local law schools focused on public interest careers.
For the 2011-2012 year, the Foundation will build on its success in the past. In addition to the annual dinner, the Foundation plans on strengthening ties to the community by holding more outreach events and working directly with public interest organizations.

3. MINORITY SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT — SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 2011 — 830 AM TO 430 PM
IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!!
Come out and join fellow SABA alums and prospects for a day of softball. SABA will have its own team against fellow bar association teams for an all day softball tournament.
Lead by our esteemed Coach, Ashok Tripathi, we will schedule a practice from 10 AM to noon on Saturday morning, August 6 for those that are interested or have never played for SABA before.
Please let Ashok know in the next couple of days whether you are in, out or a maybe for the practice and game. Feel free to forward this and to recruit others. Since we can only play three non-law related players at any one time, please focus any recruiting efforts primarily on lawyers and law students. Unless of course you know of any true superstar ringers in which case we will make space for such “special friends” of SABA. WE ESPECIALLY NEED WOMEN FOR THE TEAM!
