| Job Information | Kern County has an opening for Deputy Public Defenders, categories I-II-III-IV-V, EXAM NO. 5177.
SALARY: I: $5,135 to $6,269; II: $5,905 to $7,209; III: $6,824 to $8,330; IV: $8,888 to $10,855; V: $9,973 to $12,175; Approximate Monthly Equivalent; Paid Biweekly.
QUALIFICATIONS: I through V: All applicants must be licensed by the California State Bar and have the ability to travel to locations outside of the regular office to perform necessary legal services. AND V: four years of experience as a practicing attorney in criminal and/or civil law. IV: three years of experience as a practicing attorney in criminal and/or civil law. III: two years of experience as a practicing attorney in criminal and/or civil law. II: one year of experience in the practice of law. I: be licensed by the California State Bar. This examination will establish an eligible list from which appointments will be made in the Public Defender’s Office as needed. All Kern County employees are designated “Disaster Service Workers” through state and local laws (CA Government Code Sec. 3100-3109 and Ordinance Code Title 2-Administration, Ch. 2.66 Emergency Services.) As Disaster Service Workers, all County employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable following a significant emergency or disaster.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: IV: Under direction, conducts investigations and supervises the investigation of facts; interviews defendants, complainants and witnesses with regard to criminal proceedings; examines evidence; prepares for trial and tries the most difficult criminal cases in the Superior Court and the lower courts; prepares legal briefs, opinions, pleadings, petitions, motions, writs and other legal papers in both trial courts of the County and the Appellate Courts; confers with,trains, and advises staff on general prosecution or defense techniques and specific case situations; supervises the processing of extradition proceedings and insanity commitment proceedings; prepares correspondence and reports; may be assigned unit supervision duties for specified periods of time; and does related work as assigned. Other Functions: Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Incumbents must have the ability to perform the Essential Functions of the job.
