SABA and OCAABA discuss current issues in Immigration law at UCI law school

Introduction

The Public Interest Foundation (“Foundation”) is the non-profit affiliate of the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California.
MISSION
The Foundation is dedicated to organizing, supporting and promoting public interest activities for the benefit of the South Asian community and the Southern California community at large.
ACTIVITIES & Endeavors
Established in 2003, the Foundation is proud of its past and ongoing efforts to promote public-interest work in Southern California. The Foundation seeks to unite members and friends of the South Asian community over our shared commitment to public service, recognize the outstanding achievements of local South Asian lawyers and trailblazers and award grants to organizations and law students dedicated to serving the public interest.
Annual Banquet
The Foundation hosts an Annual Banquet to celebrate public interest work in our community. The evening serves as an opportunity for all of us to come together, build relationships and re-dedicate ourselves to serving the public interest. The evening traditionally is highlighted by a keynote address from a distinguished guest. We have had the privilege of welcoming keynote speakers such as: San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, civil rights lawyer Vanita Gupta, Islamic Shura Council leader Shakeel Syed, KPFK Pacifica Radio host Sonali Kolhatkar and Hastings law professor Vikram Amar.
“The Foundation’s 9th Annual Banquet is scheduled for March 22, 2012 at the Kyoto Grand Hotel in Los Angeles, CA.   We will be honoring the Honorable Peter Espinoza from the Los Angeles Superior Court with a Judicial Appreciation Award, Ajay Patel from Sony Network Entertainment International with a Trailblazer Award, and Shashi Hanuman from Public Counsel with a Public Interest Award.  Please join us as we honor these wonderful members of our community!”  For more information, please see the 2012 SABA PIF Banquet Announcement or contact sabapif@gmail.com. Public Interest and Trailblazer Awards
Every year at the Annual Banquet, the Foundation recognizes the achievements of local South Asian lawyers and trailblazers who have made significant and lasting contributions to our community.  The Public Interest Award is given every year to a local South Asian lawyer who has made significant contributions to public service.  Prior recipients of the Foundation’s Public Interest Award include such inspirational lawyers as:  Manjusha Kulkarni, Mona Patel-Sikora, Nitasha Sawhney, Najeeba Syeed-Miller and Aman Thind.
The Trailblazer Award is given every year to a member of the local South Asian community who has broken barriers for South Asians everywhere.  Prior recipients of the Foundation’s Trailblazer Award include such pioneers as:  Arif Alikhan, Javade Chaudhri, Rita Gunasekaran, Hon. Sanjay Kumar and Shan Thever.
Grants & Fellowships
The Foundation provides annual grants to organizations that serve South Asian communities and summer fellowships to South Asian law students committed to public interest work. The Foundation’s public interest grants play a vital role in allowing many worthwhile organizations to provide valuable services to under-served communities. Prior grant recipients include: Asian Pacific Women’s Center, California Sikh Council, Immigration Center for Women and Children, Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice, South Asian Network and the South Asian Help and Referral Agency.
The Foundation’s public interest fellowships enable distinguished law school students to work for local public interest organizations during the summer. These fellowships have been successful in encouraging law school students to serve underprivileged individuals and communities and in promoting awareness of public interest issues that impact South Asians in particular.
In its short existence, the Foundation has raised and disbursed approximately $80,000 in grants and fellowships to deserving organizations and law school students.
