For example, the Foundation has previously awarded grants to law students working on behalf of low wage workers and immigrants and to agencies focusing on domestic violence, immigration, hate crime prevention, and access to health care.
After completed proposals are received, a selection committee will screen all qualified proposals and may schedule interviews with applicants as needed. The Foundation reserves the right to request further information from applicants, to reject any proposal, and to grant awards deemed to best serve the purpose of the Foundation. In addition, all grantees are expected to submit a summary report by February 1, 2011 advising the Foundation of how the funds were utilized, along with copies of any tangible results of the funding.

About the film: Imagine spending decades of your life in jail for a crime you never committed. Since 1993, the admission of DNA evidence has helped prove the innocence of more than 150 men wrongly imprisoned for crimes of rape and murder. Heartbreaking and eyeopening, this film follows the Exonerees as they try to rebuild the lives that were stolen from them. The film makes a case that the problem is bigger and more wide-spread than anyone could imagine, showing the defense team fighting to prove the innocence of many more prisoners.
Los Angeles, California, July 6, 2009 – The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California (SABA-SC) recipient of the “2009 Chapter of the Year” award by the North American South Asian Bar Association (NASABA) recently appointed 14 new members to its Board of Directors.
The new Board has some “very big shoes to fill” said Mona Patel, the newly appointed Board President. Recognizing the outstanding contributions of last year’s board and SABA-SC’s history as the first and largest South Asian Bar Association in North America, Patel said she is “thrilled and humbled” to lead SABA-SC into 2010. A competitor by nature, Patel states that she is a firm believer in “bigger and better” and that in her new role as President, she will encourage the new Board to outdo the work done in the last term.
The new Board members entrusted with taking SABA-SC to new heights are Co-President Elects Ankita Patel and Gaurav Mohindra, Secretary Niyati Shah, Treasurer Salil Bali, Community Awareness Chair Abraham Mathew, Criminal Law Chair Halim Dhanidina, Entertainment & Media Chair Ajay Patel, Judicial Evaluations Chair Rupa Goswami, Law Student Outreach Neha Mehta, Litigation Chair Nicky Jatana, Co-Membership Chairs Ankita Patel and Gaurav Mohindra, Civil Rights Chair Vibhu Talwar, Public Interest Foundation Chair Fred Thiagarajah and Legislative Liaison Chair Asha Greenberg.
SABA-SC’s Advisory Board reads as the elite of the South Asian legal community and includes, Navneet Chugh, Pankit Doshi, Jay Gandhi, Shai Halbe, Suma Mathai, Kevin Parikh, Nimish Patel, Arnold Peter, Paul Saghera, Bijal Shah, Sheila Swaroop, Harit Trivedi, and Shanaira Udwadia.
Last year, SABA-SC’s success was largely attributed to its continued work advancing civil rights, educating the community about Post 9/11 Hate Crimes, mentoring law students and new lawyers, increasing membership and raising $30,000 for its charitable Foundation. Not to be outdone, this year’s Board is already off to a head start. New committees have been formed including ones for Criminal Law, Entertainment & Media, Pro Bono/Civil Rights and a commitment to bring home the Asian Pacific Bar Association’s Softball Tournament trophy.

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009, 7:00 PM SIKANDAR ArcLight Hollywood Cinemas
The conflict in Kashmir is explored through the eyes of a young boy in this new film from Big Pictures. Sikandar leads a simple life, living with his aunt and uncle, playing soccer, getting to know Nasreen, the new girl in town, and dealing with a trio of bullies. But, when he finds a gun, the small dramas of his life become entangled with the larger conflicts of the country. Sikandar’s innocent life soon spirals downward as he becomes embroiled in a power struggle between militant groups and the film takes on the twists and turns of a suspense thriller. By the end, Sikandar realizes that there’s no part of his life untouched by war and that he must commit violence in order to restore the innocence that now seems hopelessly lost. Piyush Jha’s bold experiment places young children at the center of a political thriller. Young Ayesha Kapoor particularly stands out as Nasreen, a complex girl who only seems to represent the film’s moral center. Popular actor Madhavan also stars as an officer desperate to curb the violence.
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009, 9:15 PM AIR INDIA 182 ArcLight Hollywood Cinemas
In June 1985, Bombay-bound Air India flight 182 exploded off the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people aboard. In the wake of Indira Ghandi’s assassination in 1984, the air attack shocked everyone, even though the Vancouver-based Sikh separatists behind it were under surveillance by Canadian law enforcement and intelligence agencies for months. Through intimate interviews with the victims’ family members and Canadian officials, reenactments, and haunting images, AIR INDIA 182 reconstructs the critical events leading up to and following the tragedy. By documenting the testimony and suffering of those who stood witness to this opening act of international terrorism in North America, the film illuminates the complex questions of national identity, counter-terrorism and political fanaticism still with us today.
