ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
Established in 2003, the Foundation is proud of its past and ongoing efforts to promote public-interest work in Southern California. To date, the Foundation has raised and distributed over $100,000 in grant support to community organizations and to law students working in the public interest that also benefits the South Asian community in Southern California. Each year, the Foundation hosts an annual fundraising banquet recognizing a trailblazer, a lawyer who has significantly contributed to the public interest, and of recent, a member of the judiciary whose efforts have advanced the goals of the South Asian bar. HOSTS ITS FIRST LEGAL CLINIC

On September 10, 2011, the Foundation hosted its first “legal clinic,” an initiative launched to connect South Asian-American attorneys with the legal needs of the South Asian community. Together with the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC) and the South Asian Network, volunteers from the South Asian bar organized a “Citizenship Workshop,” assisting over ten clients with their applications for U.S. citizenship for free. APALC, under the direction of Mark Yoshida, Esq., trained approximately twenty attorneys on the citizenship application process. The Citizenship Workshop was hosted at SAN’s offices in Artesia.

The Foundation, APALC, and SAN look forward to similar events in the future. Additionally, the Foundation will be exploring other clinics, focusing on issues such as worker’s rights and family law. If you are interested, please email the Foundation’s Clinic Chair, Sana Muttalib, viasabapif@gmail.com.
