Welcome to SABA-SC’s 2011-2012 term!
As this year’s Co-Presidents, both of us would like to welcome you to an amazing year for SABA-SC. Whether you have been a longtime SABA-SC member or are just joining us, we are confident that this term, SABA-SC is going to exceed your expectations. Building on the momentum from hosting NASABA’s Annual conference this past summer, SABA-SC has a slate of amazing events planned for this upcoming year, and this new newsletter is one of the many ways we hope to keep all of you engaged in everything SABA-SC is doing.
We enter this term looking back at the large footprint left by the former SABA-SCpresidents. With this legacy in mind, we look forward to continuing a mentorship culture within SABA-SC, so collectively we can pass along experiences within the community to cultivate the most talented bar organization in the country. By providing consistent events and communications, we seek to continue making SABA-SC a valuable resource, elevating our bar association’s presence within the profession and providing tangible benefits to our membership. Further, SABA-SC continues to aspire to serve as an integral resource to the greater South Asian community and through continued partnerships with SABA-SC’s Public Interest Foundation we are proud to see that aspiration become a reality.
We hope to see all of you involved this term and look forward to hearing feedback from each of you.
Sincerely,
Salil Bali & Fred Thiagarajah
Co-Presidents

August Mixer
On August 25, 2011, SABA held its first “Last Thursday” happy hour for this term. Mark your calendars! SABA will be hosting these monthly mixers on every last Thursday – a fun way to mingle with friends and network at the same time.

Supreme Court Review By Dean Chemerinsky
On August 31, 2011, SABA co-sponsored an MCLE event with the Iranian American Bar Association (IABA) where Dean Erwin Chemerinsky gave a review of recent US Supreme Court decisions. The event was held at UCI Law School and a reception, hosted by Regal Court Reporting and Rutan & Tucker, followed. Approximately 70 attendees made the event one of the more popular SABA events of the year.
Museum of Tolerance
On September 1, 2011, SABA Board Members Salil Bali, Kiran Sharma and Fred Thiagarajah gave a presentation to high-school students at the Museum of Tolerance. The students watched “Divided We Fall”, a documentary that captures the 9/11 backlash against Sikh Americans and were then led in a discussion on hate crimes by the SABA members.

SABA-SC Member Spotlight – Kush Desai
Kush Desai, an active member of SABA, serves as transactional counsel for Beachbody, a direct response health and fitness company. In that role, he is involved in structuring and negotiating complex business and commercial agreements, including technology and IP licensing, consulting/service agreements and distributorship/vendor relationships. He also provides regulatory guidance in the areas of Internet and media advertising, telemarketing, promotions, FTC/FCC compliance and privacy and data security.
Kush is a graduate of American University’s Washington College of Law. He received his undergraduate degree from USC, and fittingly, is a huge USC fan. Kush is an avid traveler and just returned from trips to Singapore, Vietnam (where he had the best pho of his life) and Brazil, where he gave samba a whirl.
