SABA-SC Applauds the Appointment of Hemant H. (Shashi) Kewalramani as a Magistrate Judge to the United States District Court for the Central District of California

For Immediate Release - August 22, 2017

LOS ANGELES - The South Asian Bar Association of Southern California (SABA-SC) applauds the appointment of Hemant H. (Shashi) Kewalramani to the United States District Court for the Central District of California as a Magistrate Judge. This appointment will serve to further diversify California's judiciary with an accomplished and well-respected member of the bar. Along with the Honorable Alka Sagar and the Honorable Jay Gandhi, Kewalramani is the third magistrate judge of South Asian descent to serve the Central District of California, which is comprised of the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Kewalramani will sit in Riverside, California.

Kewalramani has a varied, unique legal background. Prior to joining the bench, Kewalramani had his own firm and focused on patent litigation, federal criminal defense, and investigations by federal and state agencies. He has represented indigent criminal defendants in federal court as a member of the Central District of California's Criminal Justice Act panels in Riverside and Santa Ana. From 2003 to 2011, Kewalramani was a federal prosecutor in northern California and Orange County. Before joining the government, Kewalramani worked at an intellectual property boutique where his practice focused on patent litigation. Upon graduating from law school, he served as a law clerk in the Eastern District of Texas. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from Baylor University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

SABA-SC congratulates Kewalramani on this achievement and looks forward to his tenure on the bench.
